Just a Thought
You know, lately I've been thinking about how those in the field of education, especially those of higher education, look at dancers. In my experience I've found their opinion of us to be low. They think that we are uneducated and that our studies aren't of any import. That what we do doesn't really have much of an impact. I believe they think this way because they have never given us the chance (or we as dancers and dance educators haven't taken up those chances) to show that our work can be beneficial to society as well. We can use our knowledge and skills to perform research as well as any other field or profession and we can do it at a more human level. What do you think?

I totally agree. I also think that the impact that dance has on people is something that on many levels cannot be measured or quantified. Dance communicates to people and effects them on a spiritual level. I do not think that there is a person who can watch a piece like revelations and honestly say that it has no effect or that then have not been taught something by that piece on some level. As an educator the effect that dance has on my students is something that I have never seen in another class room. People come into a dance studio as equals working towards a common goal and together create something that unites them and turns them from individuals into a whole. I think that the whole global society could take a lesson form that and make this world a better place where people are seen for who they really are not just as they appear.
ReplyDeleteDave and I were just talking about this the other day. I feel like because I have studies movement, I am better able to know myself in all situations. Because I have discovered so much with movement, it is easier for me to learn other subjects. I feel like now I can go out and study any subject and be successful. Dave even said that when he is dancing all of his other classes feel slow because he has to be so on top of things learning dances. Dancers are intelligent!
