Weird Morning...
I woke up this morning with my heart racing. I was having a dream that I had graduated from school and while sitting in an interview I was told that my degree meant nothing and was completely worthless. The interviewee said that I would never be able to get a job with my degree. When I first woke up I started to think whether or not I was doing the right thing by getting my BA in dance. But I know now more than ever that this is not only what I want to do but this is what I'm SUPPOSED to do. A while ago I decided that I needed to get an MFA. I've looked at a few programs but I still don't really know where I want to go. Any ideas or suggestions?

"There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is
translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you
in all of time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will
never exist through any other medium and it will be lost. The world
will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is
nor how valuable nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your
business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel
open. You do not even have to believe in yourself or your work. You have
to keep yourself open and aware to the urges that motivate you. Keep
the channel open. ... No artist is pleased. [There is] no satisfaction
whatever at any time. There is only a queer divine dissatisfaction, a
blessed unrest that keeps us marching and makes us more alive than the
others."

Just a Thought
You know, lately I've been thinking about how those in the field of education, especially those of higher education, look at dancers. In my experience I've found their opinion of us to be low. They think that we are uneducated and that our studies aren't of any import. That what we do doesn't really have much of an impact. I believe they think this way because they have never given us the chance (or we as dancers and dance educators haven't taken up those chances) to show that our work can be beneficial to society as well. We can use our knowledge and skills to perform research as well as any other field or profession and we can do it at a more human level. What do you think?
This is right before our last show Saturday Nov. 19 at 7:30pm. I had the great opportunity of being the productions assistant for the BYU-I Collegiate Dancers, a student run dance company where the BYU-I dance department hires four students to direct, choreograph, and put together an entire show. Three directors are chosen to each run a company; Contemporary, World, and Ballroom. And one student is chosen to be the production assistant(me). My job included advertising, scheduling, space reservation, pre-production meetings, preparing the music for the show, stage managing, and several other small things that go with putting on a show. I even got the chance to choreograph the opening number of the show which included using all three companies together. It was probably one of the best memories I have so far here at BYU-I.
